Dr Bulelwa Mbena began her medical career with a degree from the University of Cape Town in 2009. She completed her internship and community service at the East London Hospital Complex and Uitenhage Provincial Hospital, where her passion for Internal Medicine was firmly established.

Returning to the East London Hospital Complex in 2013, she served as a Medical Officer in Internal Medicine before relocating to the Western Cape in 2015. There, she gained valuable experience in primary healthcare at the Nomzamo Clinic in Strand.

Dr Mbena then joined Groote Schuur Hospital as a Medical Officer in Internal Medicine, advancing to the role of Medical Registrar in 2017. During this period, she pursued and obtained her Master of Medicine degree from the University of Cape Town.

Following her specialist training, Dr Mbena applied her expertise as a Specialist Physician at New Somerset Hospital and later contributed to academic medicine as a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Cape Town. Her long-standing interest in lung health naturally led her to sub-specialise in Pulmonology, allowing her to deepen her expertise in this field.
